Perhaps you might have heard that the government has “free money” available to give away, but do not know how to go about getting some of it. Perhaps we should start out by defining what a grant is and explaining how it differs from a loan. The most important thing that you should know about government funded grants is that you are free to use the money and you do not have to pay it back. This is the major difference between a grant versus a loan. Frequently, the process that you have to go through to apply for a grant is similar to a loan in that you must make application and prove that you have the necessary requirements to entitle you to the money.

Grant money is interest free and non taxable. If you fulfill the grant requirements by demonstrating your need for that particular grant program, you do not require that you have to have collateral, co-signers, a credit check, a security deposit and you can even apply if you have bad credit or have a bankruptcy on your credit history. What matters is that you are a U.S. citizen and a taxpayer to make you entitled to receive these funds.

Here are some interesting facts about government grant programs. When a government agency has funds available as a grant, they place an announcement in the Federal Register announcing the grant’s availability. The grant has a time frame placed on it and application must be made during that time period. In other words, you can not apply for a government grant just any time of the year as they may not be available.

A large government grant program is in the area of business. If you are looking for additional funds to add to your business capital, the government business grant programs are a huge reservoir of FREE MONEY that is made available by the Federal Government to begin or expand a business. Anyone who is planning on starting a business for themselves or wishing to enlarge an existing business that they have just started may want to apply for a government business grant.

President Obama has stepped forward with a plan to support small business owners. In the President’s Small Business Lending Fund when approved by Congress will funnel $30 billion from the Trouble Asset Relief Program (TARP) to community and smaller banks to support small business lending by making money available to eliminate loan fees and loans available at low interest rates.

With the depressed economic markets that remain unpredictable and the desire to stimulate economic growth in all aspects, the federal government is interested in providing as much assistance to small business owners to expand or establish their own businesses as possible. It is hard to ignore a pool of money that remains so huge.

Even though many people continue to believe that they should not depend on the government for aid, the huge government programs have remained amazingly large. Most people never try for government grants since they do not understand them or feel that they are not meant for their use. Please understand that this is money that you are entitled too and it has been made available for your use. It is not just another government handout. Economically, these grants are designed to stimulate the economy and make more jobs and services available for all of us.
